Patient Conversion Rate by Practice Type: 2026 Report

Knowing how many prospective patients you convert, and how that compares to other practices, tells you whether your marketing is working or quietly leaking revenue. In this report, we share our findings on patient conversion rates across medical practice types, drawn from anonymized client data collected between 2017 and 2026.
We measure two conversion rates throughout:
Visitor to Prospective Patient Conversion Rate: the share of website visitors who contact the practice to book an appointment or ask about care.
Prospect to Patient Conversion Rate: the share of those prospective patients who go on to become an actual patient.
Across all practice types, the average practice converts about 2.4% of website visitors into prospective patients, and about 67% of those prospects into patients. Your results depend heavily on your specialty, since the stakes, urgency, and research behavior of patients differ from one field to the next. The table below breaks the numbers down by practice type.
Average Patient Conversion Rate by Medical Practice Type, 2026
Practice Type | Visitor to Prospective Patient Conversion Rate | Prospect to Patient Conversion Rate |
Allergy / Immunology | 2.2% | 62.0% |
Cardiology | 2.6% | 74.9% |
Cosmetic Surgery | 2.3% | 66.8% |
Dentistry | 3.0% | 59.8% |
Dermatology | 1.8% | 55.8% |
Family Practice | 2.1% | 67.8% |
General Practice | 2.4% | 67.9% |
Geriatrics | 2.6% | 70.6% |
Naturopathic | 2.7% | 62.6% |
Obstetrics & Gynecology | 2.3% | 75.1% |
Orthodontics | 2.0% | 63.3% |
Pediatrics | 2.4% | 61.2% |
Podiatry | 2.2% | 75.3% |
Psychiatry | 3.0% | 75.6% |
Rheumatology | 2.7% | 67.5% |
Two patterns stand out. Specialties tied to an ongoing care relationship, such as psychiatry, podiatry, obstetrics, and cardiology, convert prospects to patients at roughly 75%, because once someone reaches out they usually intend to commit. Fields where patients shop and compare, like dermatology and dentistry, show lower prospect-to-patient rates even when their visitor-to-prospect rates are high, since more of their inquiries are exploratory.
Patient Conversion Rates by Marketing Channel
Where a prospective patient comes from shapes how likely they are to convert. We analyzed the seven most common marketing channels used by the practices we worked with, again measuring both conversion stages. Organic search leads every other channel on prospect-to-patient conversion, because patients who actively search for a condition or provider arrive with clear intent.
Average Patient Conversion Rates by Marketing Channel, 2026
Marketing Channel | Audience to Prospective Patient Conversion Rate | Prospect to Patient Conversion Rate |
Organic Search (SEO) | 2.4% | 76.9% |
Paid Search (PPC) | 1.4% | 64.2% |
Organic Social | 2.1% | 73.1% |
Paid Social | 1.5% | 66.1% |
Video Marketing | 1.1% | 60.4% |
Direct Mail | 0.3% | 50.9% |
Outdoor Advertising | 0.5% | 63.4% |
Organic search and organic social convert prospects to patients at 76.9% and 73.1%, well above paid and offline channels, because the trust a patient builds while reading your content carries into the appointment. Paid channels bring volume but a colder audience, and offline channels like direct mail and outdoor advertising convert the smallest share of the people they reach.
How to Improve Your Patient Conversion Rate
If your rates trail the benchmarks above, focus on the two stages separately. To lift your visitor-to-prospect rate, make it obvious how to book on every page, answer the questions patients ask before they call, and keep contact forms short. To lift your prospect-to-patient rate, respond to inquiries within minutes rather than hours, confirm appointments proactively, and reduce the friction between the first call and the first visit.
